Birdwatching Tours

The Coorong is a wetland of international significance playing host to 12 species of international migratory birds and is the largest breeding habitat for the Australian Pelican.

Approximately 85 species of waterbirds have been recorded in the region including Plovers, Dotterels, Ducks, Swan, Cape Barren Geese and Ibis.

The Coorong provides invaluable habitat and feeding sites for birds that have travelled from China, Japan and Siberia.

Red-necked Stints are tiny birds that migrate annually from breeding grounds in the Arctic, approximately 15,000km for a one way journey.

Red-necked stints and other migratory birds can be seen feeding on the tidal flats in the Summer months.

Interesting History ...

Your tour begins on Hindmarsh Island and progresses across the Mundoo Barrage to Mundoo Island where the historical story begins to unfold.

The Old Mundoo Barrage (Dam) was built in 1914, a skeleton of it's former self, it stands proud and represents an instrumental turn in events.

Pt Blenkinsop Lighthouse, which guided paddle steamers through the Murray mouth in the 1800's, is now a solar powered lighthouse on Mundoo Island.

The Electric Telegraph from Adelaide to Melbourne, commissioned in 1857, passed through the islands.

The barrages were built from 1935 - 1940 and represent an amazing era of engineering.

Mundoo Island is home to the first commercially built hovercraft in the southern hemisphere - the Hovergem G6 Hovercraft  built in 1969.

Animals ...

You never know what you might come across on a tour of Mundoo Island ...

Tourists have been delighted with sightings of sea lions, seals, snakes, Sea Eagles, foxes and deer to name a few oddities.

You may be lucky enough to see the wild horses that are broken in when new stock horses are required.

The horses have an Arab bloodline and some of the foals are sold annually.
