Mundoo Island was a sheep station prior to the construction of the barrages.
With the resultant permanent supply of freshwater, liver fluke (living in snails) came down the river.
The sheep were used to drinking from the freshwater soaks in each paddock and when
the barrages were completed the sheep were able to access fresh water at the island's water edge.
Sadly, the sheep ingested snails which contained liver fluke and they died in their hundreds over a period of time.
This proved to be the impetus to change from sheep to cattle ...
Over the years Colin's father, Peter Grundy, bought, fattened and sold 'northern' cattle - cattle bought in from stations in the north of South Australia.
These cattle were used to roaming the dry, uninhabited environment that is the renowned harsh northern country.
Mustering northern cattle on the Coorong Islands proved to be a task that was not for the faint hearted.
The thrill of the chase on horseback had many fellas putting up their hand to help with musters.
Colin and Sally have, over many years, changed direction and developed a magnificent breeding herd of Angus cattle.
Prime Angus are turned off Mundoo Island destined for the Japanese dinner plate and local markets.
The purchase of bulls is an exacting process and certainly not taken lightly by the Grundys.
All breeding values and traits are meticulously taken into account when purchasing bulls ensuring the desired herd improvement.
Mustering is done on horseback between the islands and motorbikes and Argos on the high ground.
Mundoo Island cattle and unbroken stock horses are available for purchase at various times of the year.
